DEVELOPMENTAL MAPS: Identify and Confirm

The PRIME Developmental Maps are road maps of where students have been and where they are going mathematically. Use the Developmental Maps to identify a student's phase of mathematics understanding, pin-pointing exactly what your students can do within that phase. The majority of your students will be easy to pin-point within a phase.

Researched, developed, and validated in Canada over three years, each developmental map is poster-sized and printed in full-colour for ease of use.

  • Each strand kit contains two maps. Each map identifies the developmental phases, which are organized around key mathematical concepts and skills or big ideas
  • The Phases and Indicators Map tells you, in curriculum language, what students can do in each phase
  • The Visual Map shows you what students can do in each phase

For those few students who are harder to place on the Developmental Map, who don’t seem to fit neatly in a phase or are on the border of a phase, the Diagnostic Tools help to confirm where those students are in their mathematics understanding and their placement within a phase.

  • 7–10 diagnostic tools per strand
  • Interviews for Kindergarten to Grade 3 students
  • Written tests for students beyond Grade 3
  • Detailed, manageable scoring guidelines, with extensive support for scoring
  • Scoring guide for each test item
Deepen Understanding

After confirming your student’s placement in a phase, this Guide broadens your understanding of the phase and content in the phase.

  • Detailed description of each phase
  • Support for consolidating learning within the phase
  • Instructional focus strategies to move students forward from one phase to the next
  • Sample student responses from Canadian students for each phase, each key concept, and each key skill
  • Strategies for differentiating instruction: open and parallel activities
  • Handy reference Phases and Indicators Map
  • Handy reference Visual Map

Once you have a deeper understanding of where your students are within a phase, use the Background and Strategies book to deepen your own understanding of the math and find differentiated instructional strategies to move each and every student forward in their learning.

  • Explanations and instruction on key mathematics topics and principles
  • Support for tailoring instruction to the needs of each student
  • Canadian student responses to help illustrate key pedagogical and mathematical ideas
  • Detailed information about misconceptions and what to do to avoid or correct them
